Observations & Gallery: Regular, Chrome, Metallic\/Pearl, Clear, and Super!<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Toynami morphers were available in a numerous formats. The most basic packaging was a blister card (22.2 x 12 x 4.5 cm). The blister card is the same for all variants but a label within the blister identifies the type. Since the toy is centered in the blister, it can be susceptible to sun damage though frequently the blister itself yellows before the toy within. All blister cards include the toy packaged in fighter mode, a gun, and instructions tucked in the base of the blister.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Toynami morphers were also available as a gift-set that included six morphers and their guns in one well decorated box (32 x 27 x 6.5 cm) that includes a flip-top collector’s lid. Rather than including a small instruction leaflet, the instructions are including on the interior of the flip-top lid. This set was available in two versions, a standard set and a clear set. The clear set can be identified by the removal of the “EXCLUSIVE BEN DIXON” sticker, though Ben is still present. I presume the sticker was removed because ALL clear versions were exclusively available in the set. Since the set swaps the mass production color for the Ben Dixon figure, there is no clear version of the mass production VF-1A.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Morphers<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Chrome morphers were exclusively sold in special tins (12.5 x 9.2 x 7.7 cm) – easily the most premium package of any morpher toy. The tins feature gorgeous super deformed art of the various VF-1. Even the bottom of the lid and the bottom of the tin are decorated. Though everything gets the chrome treatment, the contents are unchanged with only instructions, a gun, and the VF-1 in the tray.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Metallic” morphers were exclusively included with copies of the Robotech Remastered DVDs. Though identified as “metallic”, they receive more of a pearl effect than a metallic look that could be confused with the chrome releases. These sets included 2 DVDs as well as a select metallic morpher toy. Contents are unchanged except the gun receives the same pearl-effect as the toy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Toynami released three super morphers before a long hiatus that was ultimately broken by the introduction of the “Version 2” morpher. The back of the box extends up to allow the toys to be sold from hooks. (17 x 15.3 x 6.5 cm or 11.5 x 15.3 x 6.5 cm if you ignore the flap for the hook). The super morphers also included a gun and instructions but added super armor consisting two back boosters, the pair of leg armors, and the pair of arm armors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Toynami resurrected the super morphers in 2025 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Robotech. The new morphers included the ability to rotate the cockpit to expose a pilot figure for fighter mode. The packaging was updated to be reminiscent of the Bandai\/Matchbox Joke Machines and I love when companies give nods to nostalgia. The dimensions of the box are unchanged from the previous super releases but the back flap for the hook is no longer present. Contents are unchanged from the previous super releases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Toynami also made the improved morpher toys available as blind box sets. Inside the small box which has no windows and shows images of all the common colors and teases a chase color, the contents remain unchanged. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Though some of these morphers were limited in quantities produced, none are highly collectible figures. See the release schedule above for details on quantities produced and how they could be obtained. Though they don’t require part-swapping for transformation, they skip guardian\/GERWALK mode entirely. They are small (X cm) and light (Y g) and contain no metal in their construction. Being super deformed budget toys, they do not conform to any popular scale. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The paint schemes on some of these releases do warrant some praise. First of all, the transparent toys definitely have a very distinct look although personally, I thought it worked better on some schemes than others. The chrome toys look sharp to me but I know some people absolutely hate the metal-plated look so obviously these aren’t for everyone. The metallic versions I think are a modest improvement over the standard paint scheme as they’re not so metallic as to get tacky or look sparkly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As you can probably imagine, these toys aren’t more sturdy or more poseable than their standard variety brethren. A word of warning though, paint jobs and platings tend to be easily scratched so if you’re really worried about keeping your limited morpher pristine you probably shouldn’t go too nuts with the number of transformations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Overall this is a total personal preference item.  If you can find these real cheap and want a little office decoration then you may find them worthwhile.  If you’re looking for a toy that’s really going to engross you… this is probably not it.  I’ve provided pics of all the Morphers in this review though so you can make your own decision of which ones you think are the best to own.  Another SUPER HUGE THANKS goes out to Zor Master<\/strong> who once again generously allowed me to photograph these toys from his private collection. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
